A Collection of Sacred Hymns for the Use of the Latter Day Saints, 1844

General Information

  • This hymnal was not officially put out by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, though it is possibly the first hymnal with tunes designed for it.
  • Many of the tunes are quite different from most modern hymns, though some are pretty much the same.

  • It is possible that the copyright on the compilation has been renewed in the reprinting (though that contains another song, and perhaps this is why the reprinting may be copyrighted). The individual songs, however, are definitely public domain.

  • There were a lot of errors in the printing of this book (some of errors with the poetic meters may have been perpetuated in the HymnWiki sheet music, and should be fixed when found).

List of Songs

(Only the first 31 had music in this hymnal.)

  • The poetic meters in the sheet music aren't all correct (that's how they were originally, too). The meters in the articles on HymnWiki, however, should be correct.
  • Some of the lyrics in the songs with music (both on the HymnWiki articles and in the sheet music) have slightly different punctuation (this is because of the difficulty of adding parentheses, and sometimes em dashes, in LilyPond - if you know a good way to add these, let me know); I copied the lyrics from the LilyPond files I had made.
