Ave Maria in Latin, Hail Mary in its traditional English rendering, is an ancient Christian prayer based on the words of the angel Gabriel and of Mary's cousin Elisabeth, to Mary in the first chapter of Luke. The text of the prayer, or of Gabriel's part of it, have been set to music many times.
