<pre>Gott sei mit dir!
(Aldamót. Ritstjóri Fridrik J. Bergmann. VI. ár. Reykjavík 1896, S. 123–125.)

Gott sei mit dir im hohen Gebirg
und lenke all deine Schritte;
doch leicht ist es, Gott zu finden;
fleh du ihn nur an um Hilfe und Kraft;
du wirst die Gefahr überwinden.

Gott sei mit dir in den Wüstenein,
fernab vom menschlichen Treiben;
du fühtest den Pfad zu verfehlen;

drum wird wohl Vorsicht sich lohnen;
doch wird dir wohl kein Unglück geschehn,
will Gott dich noch länger verschonen.

Gott sei bei dir im reißenden Fluß,
der Strömung kann Richtung er geben;
und das Waten voller Gefahren;

er dämpft das Branden und Toben;
Sturzeen rings es umdräuen;

<pre>"God Be With You!"

By Aldamót, Editor Fridrik J. Bergmann. VI. Year. Reykjavík 1896, pp. 123–125.

God be with you in the high mountains,
And guide all of your steps;
He shows you the best path to follow
And always shields your feet!
The yoke is steep, and the snowstorm fierce,
Yet it’s easy to find God;
Just call on Him for help and strength,
And you will overcome danger.

God be with you in the desert,
Far from human toil;
Though nature may seem sad and dead,
God will stay near you still.
The path is barely visible, the fog is thick,
You might fear losing your way;
But God is with you, He’ll lead you,
And you’ll find the right way.

God be with you on the icy surface,
Wherever you may go.
He is your Father, you are His child,
So do not fear or feel sorrow.
The ice is fragile, and the cracks are wide,
But caution will surely be rewarded;
No misfortune will befall you,
As long as God is keeping you safe.

God be with you in the rushing stream,
The current can give direction;
With a strong hand, He takes the reins,
And will guard your life’s protection.
The ford is treacherous, the bottom deep,
And wading is full of peril;
But God won’t tire like your horse,
And He’ll save you from harm.

God be with you on the salt-sea waves,
He quiets the crashing and roaring;
The tide will settle when He commands,
No matter how high it was swelling.
The wave is treacherous, the boat is small,
Storms swirl all around;
If God controls the helm and the oars,
You need not fear the storm’s sound.

God be with you on life’s path,
Place all things in His hands!
Though this way may often be hard,
You’ll find rest at the end.
Life is short, and happiness fickle,
So be cautious and wise, I implore you!
In life and in death, trust in His strength —
Then evil will stay far from you!</pre>

<pre>God Be With You
(Versified from the 1896 German poem “Gott sei mit dir” by Fridrik J. Bergmann)

God be with you in mountain high,
And guide your every pace;
He points the best and safest path
And shields you with His grace.
Though steep the slope and wild the storm,
Yet still He hears your cry;
Just plead for strength and help from Him—
The danger will pass by.

God be with you in desert lands,
Far from the world’s domain;
Though nature sleeps in deathlike hush,
His presence will remain.
The path is lost, the fog is thick,
And fear may cloud your view;
But He is near, and He will guide—
You’ll find the way that’s true.

God be with you on frozen ground,
Where slick the surface lies;
He is your Father, you His child—
So fear not threats or sighs.
The ice is thin, the cracks are deep,
Take care with each advance;
Yet if God wills to keep you safe,
No harm shall touch your stance.

God be with you through rivers wide,
He guides the current's flow;
He grips the reins with mighty hand
To guard where you may go.
The ford is dark, the depths unknown,
Each step a hidden snare;
But God won’t faint like weary beasts—
He’ll bring you through with care.

God be with you on stormy seas,
He calms the foaming tide;
The waves obey His voice and still
When He says, “Peace, abide.”
Though small your boat, and fierce the winds
That swirl from every side,
If God should steer, then fear no storm—
You’re safe though tempests bide.

God be with you through all your days,
Place all things in His hand.
Though life is hard and full of trials,
In peace you’ll one day stand.
Life passes swift, and joy is frail—
So let His strength be known!
In death and life, trust in His care,
And you are not alone.</pre>
