Magnificat

The term Magnificat (from the Latin, meaning "[my soul] magnifies"; in Church Latin the gn is usually pronounced ny, like a Spanish ñ) refers to the text of Luke 1:46-55 (or -56), in which Mary responds with praise to the news just brought by Gabriel of her impending virginal pregnancy, used as a church song. If sung or chanted in the words of the scripture, this is a canticle rather than a hymn per se, but the text may be recast in metrical form as a hymn.
