Welcome to HymnWiki
About HymnWiki
HymnWiki is a site dedicated to hymns, children's songs (those associated with churches and religion), religious anthems, church music, other music commonly grouped with hymns, and compilations of such. HymnWiki aims to categorize most of the hymns in existence, as well as to host sheet music, MIDI files and lyrics for as many of these as legally possible. HymnWiki is for hymns of all faiths notwithstanding there is a large focus on the music and poetry of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, past, present and future. HymnWiki began in April of 2007. See About HymnWiki for more information. If you are a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and would like to use HymnWiki for church purposes, review the Helps for Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints first.

Announcements
*The Discord invite link apparently stopped working, so I added a new one on 23 July 2025.
*I have finished restoring the PDF sheet music, MIDIs, and LilyPond files that were lost with the MediaWiki software update. The problem seems to have only affected files with non-ASCII characters and question marks in them. So, I'm guessing something in the MediaWiki software was updated to support Unicode. The only thing I wasn't able to restore was one of the ogg files (I didn't have a backup copy, and the copy on Archive.org was corrupted).
*We now have a Discord server (text-only). See the Discussion Board link in the navigation sidebar. If you wish to register, let me know there.
*To avoid broken links in future, I'm phasing out most new external links on HymnWiki, except with regard to public domain media, such as scanned hymnals. If you want to add external links, please (where possible) archive them at Archive.org, first (and use the archive link). Try to avoid linking to sites that don't let you archive their pages. The reason is to avoid unnecessary work in the future: If you feel it's vastly important for some reason, go ahead. Links to media on Archive.org are just fine.
*Terminology and articles have finally been updated to reflect President Russell M. Nelson's October 2018 talk on the name of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. If you find any I missed, please let us know on the discussion board. [Edit: I've still been finding articles that need fixing once in a while.]

Featured Hymnist
*Valdimar Briem

Featured Hymn
(See article for sheet music and midis.)
*'Begin, My Tongue, the Heavenly Theme'

Featured Compilation
*Elmhurst Hymnal, and, Orders of Worship: For the Sunday School, Young People's Meetings and Church Services, 1921

Recommendation
If you're just here looking for public domain PDF sheet music, I recommend looking at this category rather than the links in the sidebar. Note that each piece of content may be individually licensed; so, while articles in that category should contain public domain content, they may also contain restricted content (such as is the case with What Wondrous Love Is This).

1. Dear Lord and Father of mankind,
Reclothe us in our rightful mind,
The gracious calling of the Lord,
Our words and works that drown
The beauty of Thy peace.

6. Breathe through the heats of our desire
Thy coolness and Thy balm;
Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire;
Speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire,
O still, small voice of calm.
1. Dear Lord and Father of mankind,
Forgive our foolish ways;
Reclothe us in our rightful mind,
In purer lives Thy service find,
In deeper reverence, praise.

2. In simple trust like theirs who heard,
Beside the Syrian sea,
The gracious calling of the Lord,
Let us, like them, without a word,
Rise up and follow Thee.

3. O Sabbath rest by Galilee,
O calm of hills above,
Where Jesus knelt to share with Thee
The silence of eternity,
Interpreted by love!

4. With that deep hush subduing all
Our words and works that drown
The tender whisper of Thy call,
As noiseless let Thy blessing fall
As fell Thy manna down.

5. Drop Thy still dews of quietness,
Till all our strivings cease;

1. You were my vision, O Lord of my heart.
Nothing else at all—only the King of the seven heavens.
2. You were my contemplation by day and by night.
You were my vision in restful sleep.

3. You were my speech; You were my understanding.
You were with me, and I was with You.

4. You were my Father, and I was Your son.
You were with me, and I was with You.
5. You were my battle-shield; You were my sword.
You were my dignity; You were my delight.

6. You were my shelter; You were my stronghold.
You lifted me up into the gathering of angels.

7. You were all goodness to my body and soul.
You were my kingship both in heaven and on earth.

8. You alone were the one love of my heart.
No one else was, O High King of heaven.

9. May Your hand hold me always—
My portion, my pulse—in the abundance of Your grace.

10. You alone were my noble inheritance.
I desire neither people nor lifeless riches.

11. You alone were dear to me above all possessions, above all life;
As one dead to the world, I looked only to You.

12. Your love in my soul, Your grace in my heart—
Grant me that, O King of the seven heavens.

13. O King of the seven heavens, grant me this:
Your love in my heart, Your love in my soul.

14. With the King of all, after the victory of judgment,
May I dwell in the kingdom of heaven, O brightness of the sun.

15. Beloved Father, hear, hear my cry.
Pity the poor one who suffers in misery.

16. O heart of my heart, whatever may come,
10. Be thou alone my noble and wondrous estate.
I seek not men, nor lifeless wealth.

11. Be thou the constant guardian of every possession and every life (?).
For our corrupt desires are dead at the mere sight of thee.

12. Thy love in my soul and in my heart—
Grant this to me, O King of the seven heavens.

13. O King of the seven heavens grant me this—
Thy love to be in my heart and in my soul.

14. With the King of all with (?) Him after victory won by piety
May I be in the kingdom of heaven, O brightness of the sun.

15. Beloved Father, hear, hear my lamentation;
Timely is the cry of woe of this miserable wretch.

16. O heart of my heart, whate'er befall me,
Lyrics from Mark Hamilton Dewey's SSATBB arrangement
*Note: The arranger isn't satisfied with this arrangement—so, now that he has found a translation of all sixteen Irish verses, he plans to make a new version.
*Contributer: The arranger
*Copyright: Public Domain - All portions that were not already public domain were released to the public domain by the arranger on 27 July 2007. He already had released the versification (except for a few changes in the third verse, which he released to the public domain in 2007) to the public domain in 2006.
*Poetic Meter: Irregular, but it may work as 5 5 6 4 5 5 6 5 and/or 5 5 5 5 5 5 6 5.
*Arranger's Notes: The first two verses differ significantly from the original, and the other verses contain some less major alterations, mostly for versification and to conform with the mood established by the changes in the first two verses. The second verse was changed for several reasons: 1. To accommodate female singers (i.e. it once said and I Thy true son, with son referring to the singer. 2. The altered note on the last system made it difficult to simply reversify that verse. The first verse was altered to avoid a certain double meaning to those who would think of the song less poetically. The first line of the first verse was changed for the sake of mood, as it contrasted strangely with the previous verses, before the change, although I did like for the fight more than in the fight and in the fight is quickly growing on me with the new mood, but for just didn't fit as well. The change to Guardian I much preferred, as it avoided the whole conflict of what kind of armor name I should use (plus it made the song seem less war-like, though it fit well being thus in the original version). Heaven opened, as if anew, the gentle light rose forth from the cold deep of death.

3. The Spirit still hovers as before over clear water;
The doors of heaven’s glory open to the dear children of the Lord.
After the blessed bath of baptism, the flower grows up, newly dewed, with the life in bright light.

Recommendation
If you're just here looking for public domain PDF sheet music, I recommend looking at this category rather than the links in the sidebar. Note that each piece of content may be individually licensed; so, while articles in that category should contain public domain content, they may also contain restricted content (such as is the case with What Wondrous Love Is This).
