Joseph the Hymnographer was a prolific ninth-century (d. 883) Greek-language hymnist. Born in Sicily, lived as an adult in Thessalonica, Rome, Crete (reputedly as a slave of pirates), and Constantinople. He was an activist on the side of icons during the iconoclast controversy, which led to his fleeing Constantinople, temporarily, for Rome. He is thought to have written perhaps as many as a thousand hymns.

Disambiguation
This article is about the tune customarily associated with Julia Ward Howe's Battle Hymn of the Republic (first line: Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord). There is another tune also called Battle Hymn: Battle Hymn (Whitaker), metrically 8 8 8 8, which The Cyber Hymnal associates with the lyric "Eternal Father, Thou Has Said". There is also another tune associated with an Esperanto version of the Howe hymn, but with an altered refrain. This tune can be seen at the article Batal-Himno (Beatty).

Origin
The date of composition of this tune, and the identity of its composer, are not certain. It is often attributed to [John] William Steffe, or given an anonymous attribution such as "US Campmeeting Tune, early 19th century".

Also called
*Battle Hymn of the Republic — this is the title of the most famous hymn associated with the tune, written in 1861 by Julia Ward Howe, and published (minus the sixth verse) in the Atlantic Monthly in 1862.
*John Brown's Body — this is the title of the preexisting lyrics Julia Ward Howe was familiar with when she wrote her text; this is what the Cyber Hymnal™ calls the tune. Not a hymn, the text is a satirical piece about a Massachusetts militiaman with the same name as the famous abolitionist.
*Say Brother Will You Meet Us — this is the title of the earliest hymn associated with the tune, an anonymous 1850s campmeeting song reputedly of Methodist origin.
These keep the guard amid Salem's high towers,
Thrones, principalities, virtues and power,
Where, with the living ones, mystical four,
Cherubim, seraphim bow and adore.

“Who like the Lord?” thunders Michael the chief;
Raphael, “the cure of God,” comforteth grief;
And, as at Nazareth, prophet of peace,
Gabriel, “the light of God,” bringeth release.

Then, when the earth was first poised in mid space,
Then, when the planets first sped on their race,
Then, when were ended the six days’ employ,
Then all the sons of God shouted for joy.

Still let them succor us; still let them fight,
Lord of angelic hosts, battling for right;
Till, where their anthems they ceaselessly pour,
We with the angels may bow and adore.
1. Hör jubelklangens enkla ljud,
Klara ljud, glada ljud,
En helsning bringar ifrån Gud.
Säll enhvar som tror den!
Se nu är salighetens dag,
Nådens dag, lifvets dag,
En tid af himmelskt välbehag
Hvilar öfver jorden.

Chorus:
O stora bud ifrån vår Gud!
Med väldig röst må sången skalla
Att enhvar till frihet kalla.
Frälsning bjudes fritt åt alla
Under nådens jubelår.

2. För verldens synder Jesus led,
Villigt led, tåligt led,
Ja dödens bittra kamp han stred
Att från död oss frälsa.
Hvar syndaträl kan nu bli fri,
Rättsligt fri, evigt fri.
Den fattige nu rik kan bli,
Sargad själ få helsa.

3. Så låtom oss till Herren gå,
Alla gå, genast gå,
Att nåd för nåd af honom få
Och vår hyllning bringa.
För verlden ljuda skall vår sång,
Glada sång, hjertats sång,
Tills inför lammets tron en gång
Bättre den skall klinga.
The Irish text at ucc.ie is in 16 stanzas. Most current American English hymnals that contain this hymn give four stanzas, the text as at oremus.org but omitting the third (breastplate) stanza. The Summit Choirbook gives an additional stanza.
*Arranger's Notes: The first two verses differ significantly from the original, and the other verses contain some less major alterations, mostly for versification and to conform with the mood established by the changes in the first two verses. The second verse was changed for several reasons: 1. To accommodate female singers (i.e. it once said and I Thy true son, with son referring to the singer. 2. The altered note on the last system made it difficult to simply reversify that verse. The first verse was altered to avoid a certain double meaning to those who would think of the song less poetically. The first line of the first verse was changed for the sake of mood, as it contrasted strangely with the previous verses, before the change, although I did like for the fight more than in the fight and in the fight is quickly growing on me with the new mood, but for just didn't fit as well. The change to Guardian I much preferred, as it avoided the whole conflict of what kind of armor name I should use (plus it made the song seem less war-like, though it fit well being thus in the original version).
Amazing Grace is the customary title of one of the best-known hymns, written (as usually sung, all but the last stanza) by John Newton, who originally entitled it Faith's Review and Expectation when he published it in his Olney Hymns in 1779. Its customary tune is New Britain. The stanza beginning "When we've been there ten thousand years", often sung as the last stanza of "Amazing Grace", is not part of the hymn as written by John Newton, but is by an unknown poet, published as early as 1829.
As a common-meter lyric (8 6 8 6, Amazing Grace can be sung to literally thousands of extant tunes. While for over a century New Britain has been overwhelmingly the most popular choice, inextricably linked with the hymn in the minds of John Doe and Jane Q. Public, it is not the only tune to which the text has been sung.

*New Britain by James P. Carrell (1787 - 1854) and David S. Clayton, 1831

It can be an interesting and amusing exercise - and with discipline, a worshipful one - to try singing a text as well known as this to an unexpected (yet 8 6 8 6) tune. For example, Amazing Grace can be sung well to "House of the Rising Sun" as well as to the theme song of the TV show Gilligan's Island.

Hymn 118
C.M.
1. Amazing grace! (how sweet the sound.)
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,—
Was blind, but now I see.

2. 'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear,
The hour I first believed!

3. Through many dangers, toils, and snares,
I have already come;
Tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.

4. The Lord has promised good to me,
His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be
As long as life endures.

5. Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease;
I shall possess within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.

6. The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
The sun forbear to shine;
But God, who called me here below
Will be forever mine.

10 10 11 11
1. Begone! unbelief, my Savior is near,
And for my relief will surely appear;
By prayer let me wrestle, and he will perform,
With Christ in the vessel, I smile at the storm.

2. Tho' dark be my way, since he is my guide,
'Tis mine to obey, 'tis his to provide;
Tho' cisterns be broken, and creatures all fail,
The word he has spoken shall surely prevail.

3. His love in time past forbids me to think
He'll leave me at last in trouble to sink;
Each sweet Ebenezer I have in review,
Confirms his good pleasure to bring me quite through.

4. Since all that I meet shall work for my good,
The bitter and sweet, the med'cine is food:
Tho' painful at present, 'twill cease before long,
And then, O how pleasant the conqueror's song.

1. Begone, unbelief! my Savior is near,
And for my relief will surely appear:
His way was much rougher and darker than mine:
Did Jesus then suffer, and shall I repine?

2. Though dark be my way, since he is my guide,
'Tis mine to obey, 'tis his to provide:
Experience hath taught me on him to repose,
Who thus far hath brought me secure from my foes.

3. Why should I complain, when sorrows oppress,
Temptation, or pain, or want, or distress?
The heirs of salvation, I know from his Word,
Through much tribulation must follow their Lord.

4. The promise secure through ages hath stood,
That all we endure shall work for our good:
Though painful at present the path may be found,
It leads where, incessant, true pleasures abound.

Christ the head and cornerstone,
Hear thy servants as they pray;
Shed within its walls alway.
Lyrics from A Collection of Sacred Hymns for the Use of the Latter Day Saints, 1844
1. Lord, we come before thee now,
At thy feet we humbly bow;
O! do not our suit disdain;
Shall we seek thee, Lord, in vain?

2. In thine own appointed way
Now we seek thee - here we stay;
Lord, from hence we would not go,
Till a blessing thou bestow.

3. Send some message from thy word,
That may joy and peace afford;
Comfort those who weep and mourn,
Let “the time of love” return.

4. Grant we all may seek, and find,
Thee our gracious God, and kind;
Heal the sick, the captive free,
Let us all rejoice in thee.
Mark Hamilton Dewey wrote the parts and adapted the lyrics from several versions (including Connie Dover's); he also wrote the third verse (though it is meant to be a re-write of a popular public domain verse). Verses 1, 5, 6 and 8 are based on Connie Dover's arrangement of those lyrics. Also, the note durations of the melody are based upon Connie Dover's arrangement (although the durations in her arrangement vary slightly from verse to verse, and this arrangement only uses one of those variations).
**The lyrics—except for those of verses 1, 5, 6 and 8—may be treated as if they were public domain. The parts written (not including the duration changes made by Connie Dover) may also be treated as if they were public domain.

229
Tune—Holy War.
P.M.
1. What wondrous love is this? O my soul, O my soul!
What wondrous love is this, O my soul?
What wondrous love is this?
Which caused the Lord of bliss
To bear the dreadful curse,
For my soul.

2. When I was sinking down, sinking down, sinking down,
When I was sinking down, sinking down,
When I was sinking down,
Beneath God's awful frown,
Christ laid aside his crown
For my soul.

3. When I began to pray for my soul, for my soul,
When I began to pray for my soul,
When I began to pray,
Thus the word of God did say,
Christ is the truth and the way,
For thy soul.

4. He shed his heavenly light in my soul, in my soul,
He shed his heavenly light in my soul,
He shed his heavenly light,
To disperse the gloom of night,
Now it shines with radiance bright,
In my soul.

230. The same continued.
1. Ye winged seraphs, fly, bear the news, bear the news,
Ye winged seraphs, fly, bear the news,
Ye winged seraphs, fly,
Like comets through the sky,
Fill vast eternity
With the news.

2. Ye friends of Zion's king, join in praise, join in praise,
Ye friends of Zion's king, join in praise;
Ye friends of Zion's king,
With hearts and voices sing,
And strike each tuneful string,
In his praise.

3. And when from death made free, we will sing, we will sing,
And when from death made free, we will sing,
And when from death made free,
We'll sing and joyful be,
Through all eternity
We will sing.

Lyrics from The Hesperian Harp, 1848, by Dr. William Hauser (no. 234)
1. What wondrous love is this,
O my soul! O my soul!
What wondrous love is this, O my soul!
What wondrous love is this
That caused the Lord of bliss
To bear the dreadful curse,
For my soul, for my soul,
To bear the dreadful curse, for my soul.

2. When I was sinking down,
Sinking down, sinking down,
When I was sinking down, sinking down;
When I was sinking down,
Beneath God's righteous frown,
Christ laid aside his crown,
For my soul, for my soul,
Christ laid aside his crown, for my soul.

3. Ye winged seraphs, fly!
Bear the news! bear the news!
Ye winged seraphs fly! bear the news!
Ye winged seraphs fly! bear the news,
Like comets through the sky,
Fill vast eternity
With the news, with the news,
Fill vast eternity with the news!

4. To God, and to the Lamb,
I will sing, I will sing,
To God, and to the Lamb, I will sing;
To God, and to the Lamb,
Unto the great I AM,
While millions join the theme,
I will sing, I will sing,
While millions join the theme, I will sing.

5. Come, friends of Zion's King,
Join the praise, join the praise,
Come, friends of Zion's King, join the praise!
Come, friends of Zion's King,
With hearts and voices sing,
And strike each tuneful string,
In his praise, in his praise,
And strike each tuneful string in his praise.

6. And when from death we're free,
We'll sing on, we'll sing on,
And when from death we're free, we'll sing on;
And when from death we're free,
We'll sing, and joyful be,
And through eternity
We'll sing on, we'll sing on,
And through eternity we'll sing on.

7. Yes, when to that bright world
We arise, we arise,
Yes, when to that bright world we arise—
When to that world we go,
Free from all pain and wo,
We'll join the happy throng,
And sing on, and sing on,
We'll join the happy throng, and sing on.

**Arrangement Notes: This was originally written as an SSA arrangement, but the arranger decided it was easier to write full choir parts than a piano accompaniment. All in all, the full choir version sounds much like the regular arrangement, with a fuller sound and a few differences here and there that were necessary to keep it functional as an SSA arrangement. (If something more unique is desired, try singing it SSA.) The chord progression is almost exactly like that of the original.
LDS Notes
It seems likely that the reason the third verse is missing in the current LDS hymnal is that the tune meditation, commonly used with this song (which is in common meter), was not published in early church hymnals, but rather another tune written in common meter double was used in Deseret Sunday School Songs, 1909; there were five verses in the original hymn, and so to make it fit common meter double one of the verses had to be dropped.

1. There is a green hill far away
Without a city wall,
Where the dear Lord was crucified,
Who died to save us all.

2. We may not know, we cannot tell,
What pains He had to bear;
But we believe it was for us
He hung and suffered there.
3. He died that we might be forgiv'n,
He died to make us good,
That we might go at last to heav'n
Saved by His precious blood.

4. There was no other good enough
To pay the price of sin.
He only could unlock the gate
Of heav'n, and let us in.

5. O, dearly, dearly has He loved,
And we must love Him too,
And trust in His redeeming blood,
And try His works to do.
Lyrics from the Cyber Hymnal
Hail to the brightness of Zion’s glad morning!
Joy to the lands that in darkness have lain!
Hushed be the accents of sorrow and mourning;
Zion in triumph begins her mild reign.

Hail to the brightness of Zion’s glad morning!
Long by the prophets of Israel foretold!
Hail to the millions from bondage returning!
Gentiles and Jews the blest vision behold.

Lo, in the desert rich flowers are springing,
Streams ever copious are gliding along;
Loud from the mountain tops echoes are ringing,
Wastes rise in verdure, and mingle in song.

See, from all lands, from the isles of the ocean,
Praise to the Savior ascending on high;
Fallen the engines of war and commotion;
Shouts of salvation are rending the sky.

Textual variants
The 1985 LDS hymnal has:
* "glad" for "mild" in line 1d and for "blest" in 2d.
* "Hark!" for "See," in 4a.
* "Jehovah" for "the Savior" in 4b.

Christian Worship, 1941 has:
* "weapons" for "engines" in 4c.

There are a few other inconsequential punctuation and spelling differences in both hymnals.

*Land of Rest
*Amazing Grace (Ritchie) (see this page at TTT-Himnaro Cigneta)

It can be an interesting and amusing exercise - and with discipline, a worshipful one - to try singing a text as well known as this to an unexpected (yet 8 6 8 6) tune. For example, Amazing Grace can be sung well to "House of the Rising Sun" as well as to the theme song of the TV show Gilligan's Island.
C.M.
1. Amazing grace! (how sweet the sound.)
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,—
Was blind, but now I see.

2. 'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear,
The hour I first believed!

3. Through many dangers, toils, and snares,
I have already come;
Tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.

4. The Lord has promised good to me,
His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be
As long as life endures.

5. Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease;
I shall possess within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.

6. The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
The sun forbear to shine;
But God, who called me here below
Will be forever mine.
